II.291] by Andy Warhol brings a left-facing classical sculptural head with thick, textured curls into the unmistakable visual world of Pop Art. Its stone-like profile, strong nose and coiled hair make an antique likeness feel as direct as a twentieth-century publicity portrait. The subject offers a distinctive way to explore the transformation of an ancient ruler into a recognisable cultural icon. This poster is designed for contemporary wall display, with the image itself remaining the focal point.

About the Artwork and Alexander The Great

In the early 1980s Warhol revisited classical history through Alexander the Great, treating the ancient Macedonian ruler as another famous face. The project also acknowledged the important support of art dealer Alexander Iolas, an early advocate of Warhol’s career. The sculptural profile is recognisably antique, but the saturated, high-contrast treatment places it firmly in the vocabulary of twentieth-century Pop Art.

Composition and colour: Here the classical head reads as dark green and charcoal against a purple ground, with fine reddish contours picking out the curls and features. The subject and design make an expressive addition to a thoughtfully chosen gallery wall, whether displayed alone or with other examples of twentieth-century graphic art.

Why this image matters: The subject is not simply decoration. It offers a way to consider the transformation of an ancient ruler into a recognisable cultural icon. Warhol’s approach treats images that viewers may already know as material for a fresh visual encounter, where cropping, colour, typography or repetition can reshape their meaning.

Premium Matte Poster Paper

Your poster is produced on smooth, heavyweight uncoated paper with a non-reflective finish.
