II.272] by Andy Warhol brings Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wearing an oversized broad-brimmed hat into the unmistakable visual world of Pop Art. The great circular sweep of the hat frames a calm, thoughtful face and gives a historic portrait surprising visual drama. The subject offers a distinctive way to explore the crossing of classical literature and modern celebrity-making. This poster is designed for contemporary wall display, with the image itself remaining the focal point.

About the Artwork and Goethe

Warhol created his Goethe portfolio in 1982, transforming the German literary figure Johann Wolfgang von Goethe into an unlikely Pop Art personality. The source image draws on a historic portrait by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, revealing Warhol’s interest in fame beyond contemporary mass media. A broad-brimmed hat and thoughtful profile connect the contemporary colour treatment with its eighteenth-century portrait source.

Composition and colour: The head and broad hat are rendered mostly in black and golden yellow over a pale field, accentuating the facial contour. The subject and design make an expressive addition to a thoughtfully chosen gallery wall, whether displayed alone or with other examples of twentieth-century graphic art.

Why this image matters: The subject is not simply decoration. It offers a way to consider the crossing of classical literature and modern celebrity-making. Warhol’s approach treats images that viewers may already know as material for a fresh visual encounter, where cropping, colour, typography or repetition can reshape their meaning.

Premium Matte Poster Paper

Your poster is produced on smooth, heavyweight uncoated paper with a non-reflective finish.
