II.98] by Andy Warhol brings Mao Zedong in a frontal official portrait, wearing a high-collared jacket into the unmistakable visual world of Pop Art. The familiar pose, straight collar and controlled expression stay constant, while the surrounding surfaces and facial colour change from one print to another. The subject offers a distinctive way to explore the tension between political authority and the culture of reproduced images. This poster is designed for contemporary wall display, with the image itself remaining the focal point.

About the Artwork and Mao

Warhol’s Mao portraits grew out of the politically charged visual climate surrounding President Nixon’s 1972 visit to China. Based on a highly circulated official image of Mao Zedong, the series turns an emblem of political authority into the language of mass-produced celebrity portraiture. The sitter’s familiar expression remains steady while unexpected colours interrupt the official image’s authority.

Composition and colour: The sitter’s face is ochre-brown against a saturated dark blue background, with the jacket rendered largely in light neutral tones. The subject and design make an expressive addition to a thoughtfully chosen gallery wall, whether displayed alone or with other examples of twentieth-century graphic art.

Why this image matters: The subject is not simply decoration. It offers a way to consider the tension between political authority and the culture of reproduced images. Warhol’s approach treats images that viewers may already know as material for a fresh visual encounter, where cropping, colour, typography or repetition can reshape their meaning.

Premium Matte Poster Paper

Your poster is produced on smooth, heavyweight uncoated paper with a non-reflective finish.
