Athletic gesture, uniform details and the motion of the figure make the image feel connected to televised sports and mass fandom. The subject offers a distinctive way to explore the manufacture of sporting celebrity through images. This poster is designed for contemporary wall display, with the image itself remaining the focal point.

About the Artwork and Pete Rose

In 1985 the Cincinnati Art Museum commissioned Warhol to portray baseball player Pete Rose as the athlete approached Ty Cobb’s longstanding hits record. The project extended the artist’s fascination with celebrity beyond movie stars into the world of professional sport. An athlete celebrated in print becomes another example of a famous face reproduced for mass public attention.

Composition and colour: An athlete celebrated in print becomes another example of a famous face reproduced for mass public attention. The subject and design make an expressive addition to a thoughtfully chosen gallery wall, whether displayed alone or with other examples of twentieth-century graphic art.

Why this image matters: The subject is not simply decoration. It offers a way to consider the manufacture of sporting celebrity through images. Warhol’s approach treats images that viewers may already know as material for a fresh visual encounter, where cropping, colour, typography or repetition can reshape their meaning.

Premium Matte Poster Paper

Your poster is produced on smooth, heavyweight uncoated paper with a non-reflective finish.
