Mao [F. & S. II.125A] framed poster by Andy Warhol brings the subject of Mao into a ready-to-hang wooden frame. The original work is associated with Warhol’s 1974 output; its artistic significance lies in the way he reimagined the subject through graphic image-making.

About the Artwork: Meaning & Analysis

Warhol’s Mao portraiture grew from the vast circulation of the Chinese leader’s official image and the heightened international attention following President Nixon’s visit to China in 1972. Reworking a political symbol through methods associated with commercial mass images made propaganda, celebrity and reproduction collide.

Its identity as a separate plate invites the viewer to consider why Warhol returned repeatedly to the same sitter or motif instead of settling on a single definitive image.

Visual Composition and Artistic Details

The official frontal likeness becomes the foundation for freely manipulated colour. Repetition across prints shifts the face away from its solemn political function toward a deliberately ambiguous pop-cultural icon. In this catalogue-numbered version, the relationship between the source picture and its graphic rendering is part of the individual plate’s identity.

The identifier F. & S. II.125A refers to this specific work or portfolio version in the original catalogue. It helps distinguish it from other Warhol works with similar subjects or titles.
