Speed Skater [F. & S. II.303] framed poster by Andy Warhol brings the subject of Speed Skater into a ready-to-hang wooden frame. The original work is associated with Warhol’s 1983 output; its artistic significance lies in the way he reimagined the subject through graphic image-making.
About the Artwork: Meaning & Analysis
Speed Skater was created for an art project connected with the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics. The skater’s movement offered Warhol a chance to return to the celebrity appeal and graphic excitement of sport without making a conventional athlete headshot.
The Olympic connection links a dramatic image of movement to Warhol’s enthusiasm for the public profiles of sports figures.
