Wayne Gretzky 99 [F. & S. II.306] framed poster by Andy Warhol brings the subject of Wayne Gretzky 99 into a ready-to-hang wooden frame. The original work is associated with Warhol’s 1984 output; its artistic significance lies in the way he reimagined the subject through graphic image-making.
About the Artwork: Meaning & Analysis
Wayne Gretzky #99 presents the Canadian hockey player as a celebrity of sport. Warhol’s willingness to give athletes the same portrait treatment as singers and film stars reveals how far his idea of fame extended during the late 1970s and 1980s.
Warhol treats the hockey champion as a star whose image can circulate like those of musicians and movie actors.
Visual Composition and Artistic Details
A blue background and yellow linework frame layered imagery of Gretzky, emphasizing both his likeness and the rhythm of sport.
The identifier F. & S. II.306 refers to this specific work or portfolio version in the original catalogue. It helps distinguish it from other Warhol works with similar subjects or titles.
